Comprehensive Care for Your Beloved Pets
Dedicated to enhancing your pet’s well-being through a wide range of specialized services, ensuring happier and healthier lives for every family member.
Holistic Pet Care
We believe that regular checkups and wellness exams are critical to your pet’s well-being. These wellness exams give us a chance to evaluate the overall health of your pet while also giving us a baseline for their own unique bodies and tendencies.
Not only do these exams keep us up-to-date with your pet’s health, they also allow us to detect potential problems before they become serious. Your pet will be thoroughly examined by a veterinarian and this checkup gives us vital information to help keep your pet healthy.
Regular wellness exams also make your pet more familiar with our veterinary hospital, which makes future visits easier on them and you. Please contact us today if you have any questions or would like to learn more about how we care for your pet.

Family Veterinary Hospital, PC is pleased to have teamed up with Certified Dog Behavior Consultant Vrnda Bailey from Watch My Wag, LLC to provide Behavior Treatment and Services. We provide help to families whose pets are suffering from phobias, fears, anxiety, aggression, compulsive disorders, excessive barking inappropriate elimination, destructive behaviors, and more. Our goal is to change your pet’s behavior through compassionate, comprehensive care, thereby improving the relationship between your pet and your family. While training may temporarily inhibit a pet’s problem behavior, we seek to change how your pet perceives their world and reduce or eliminate the underlying cause of the problem.
Besides the obvious YUCK factor when your pet has bad breath, did you know dental disease can cause pain, infection, fractured jaws, blindness, and worsen systemic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease? At every exam, we look at your pet’s teeth for signs of gingivitis, broken teeth, swelling, and pus and let you know if your pet could benefit from a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT). All of our COHATs involve general anesthesia, charting the entire mouth, full mouth intra-oral digital X-rays, scaling, polishing, and an application of an anti-plaque gel. Then the doctor develops a treatment plan to address all the problems seen during the charting and xrays. In many cases, teeth are too diseased to stay in the mouth and they are extracted. Pets don’t actually need teeth, but they do deserve and need a healthy mouth free from pain and infection.
We know that emergencies can be a stressful time for you, so we will do our best to help make the process easier for you and your pet.

Do you have a cool critter? Looking for a cool vet who loves your cool critter? Dr. Meghan has a lot of love and experience with the weird and wonderful pets! She sees small mammals like sugar gliders, bunnies, ferrets, guinea pigs, rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and all the other little pocket pets.
Reptiles are her first love- iguanas got her into this whole business, so bring on the lizards and turtles and snakes oh my! Dr. Meghan has experience with all kinds of birds, from parrots to peacocks to doves and everything in between. Got amphibians? Yep, we see frogs and toads too! We’ll even see the venomous snakes and invertebrates like tarantulas and scorpions. No pet is too wacky for Dr. Meghan!
Lots of people keep fish as pets. Dr. Meghan has a special interest in aquatic medicine and would love to help you out.
We can offer both fresh and salt water quality testing, necropsies to help figure out why a fish has died (hopefully to prevent more fish from dying), and other diagnostics. We can even do surgery on fish! Very limited non-emergency “farm calls” are available for clients with koi ponds.
We stock a full range of heartworm prevention, flea and tick control, and other medications that your pet needs. But we are also looking out for your pocketbook! Many times we write a prescription for generic medications that can be filled at a human pharmacy for a very low price.
We know how hard it can be to afford medications for your pet, so we are doing the best we can to make sure your pet gets what he or she needs. We also work with local compounding pharmacists to help us formulate medications for pets who are hard to pill or really tiny. Whatever your pet needs, we’ll make sure we can get it for you.
Please note that veterinary hospitals are not licensed pharmacies, so we can only legally dispense prescription medications to current patients.
Many people are keeping so-called farm animals more as pets these days. We love backyard chickens and other birds, small ruminants (sheep, goats, alpacas, etc.) and pigs. We offer medicine and surgery for all of these species, including spaying and neutering pot belly pigs. Unfortunately Dr. Meghan is deathly allergic to horses so we can’t see them here. Sorry!
Saying goodbye to your pet can be extremely difficult. The process can be emotionally and mentally draining. We don’t want you to be alone at the end stages of a pet’s life, and we promise to do everything we can to make it easier on you and your pet. Most of all, we promise to treat each case with compassionate and understanding care.
Knowing when the time is right can be a difficult choice. There are many factors that go into deciding to euthanize a pet, and it is a personal issue that differs from pet owner to pet owner. But every pet owner is inevitably faced with making that tough decision, and we want to be there alongside you to aid in any way we can.
If you have special requests, please let us know and we will be sure to accommodate them. Dealing with the end of a pet’s life is never easy, but we want to do whatever we can to make the process less difficult. Please contact us today to learn more about our hospice and euthanasia services.
At Family Veterinary Hospital, we are happy to offer microchipping. Every year, thousands and thousands of pets go missing. Not knowing where your pet is or how to bring them back can be a helpless, hopeless feeling. It’s a tragedy that happens all too often.
But there is a simple, safe, and effective way to ensure your pet’s safety and retrieval should they ever become lost. Microchipping is a standard procedure that implants a tiny chip underneath your pet’s fur. It is a painless and relatively fast procedure, and is completely safe.
This microchip is registered with your pet’s vital information, and can be scanned by any veterinarian or animal shelter so that they can return your pet directly to you.
Save yourself the heartache and stress of a lost pet. Microchips bring pets home.
Family Veterinary Hospital offers nutritional counselling for pet owners of Serves Lee County, Central North Carolina and surrounding areas. If you have any questions about your pet’s diet or would like more information about your pet’s nutritional needs please contact us today. We can set up a nutrition plan for your pet.
Obesity is a common problem among pets, as it can be easy to over-feed a pet that knows how to beg. But being overweight is a serious problem for animals, and can cause real health problems as they get older. With proper diet and exercise, all pets should be able to meet their dietary needs and be within a healthy weight range.
A pet’s nutritional needs change as they enter different stages of their lives. The best way to make sure your pet’s needs are being met is to consult with us about a diet made specifically for them and their lifestyle. Please contact us if you have any questions; we would love to speak with you.
Pain is a terrible thing. Family Veterinary Hospital wants to alleviate as much pain and discomfort in our patients as possible. In an effort to bring you the highest quality care, we are dedicated to provide top notch pain management.
When our pets are in pain, so are we. It’s an awful feeling to know that your special friend is hurting, especially when there isn’t anything you can do to help them. It is our goal to eliminate as much pain as possible, and to give these pets a better quality of life.
We also anticipate and plan for procedures with the potential for future pain. In addition, we also work with pet owners to educate them on how to recognize signs of pain in your pet.
The idea of your pet being infested with parasites is a disturbing thought, but it’s also a medical issue that can have serious consequences if not properly dealt with or prevented. Parasites pose a variety of health issues for our pets, who can be very susceptible to certain parasites depending on age, region, and other factors.
At Family Veterinary Hospital, we emphasize the importance of preventing parasites. Through preventative measures, you can successfully protect your pet. But pets that are not protected often develop parasites, leading to serious problems for them and their owners.
The cost of prevention is minimal compared to the cost of treatment, which can be expensive and stressful on your pet. Parasites like heartworm can even be fatal, so preventing parasites is of the utmost importance.

Pet insurance pays, partly or in total, for veterinary treatment of the insured person’s ill or injured pet. Some policies will pay out when the pet dies, or if it is lost or stolen.
As veterinary medicine is increasingly employing expensive medical techniques and drugs, and owners have higher expectations for their pets’ health care and standard of living than previously, the market for pet insurance has increased.
Pet insurance companies are beginning to offer the pet owner more of an ability to customize their coverage by allowing them to choose their own level of deductible or co-insurance. This allows the pet owner to control their monthly premium and choose the level of coverage that suits them the best.
Some of the differences in insurance coverage are:
– Whether congenital and hereditary conditions (like hip dysplasia, heart defects, eye cataracts or diabetes) are covered;
– How the reimbursement is calculated (based on the actual vet bill, a benefit schedule or usual and customary rates);
– Whether the deductible is on a per-incident or an annual basis;
– Whether there are any limits or caps applied (per incident, per year, age or over the pet’s lifetime); and
– Whether there is an annual contract that determines anything diagnosed in the previous year of coverage is considered pre-existing the next year.
We are happy to provide care for poultry as well as pet birds. Our team is trained and experienced in caring for avian patients, so we want you to know that your bird is receiving top quality care.
There are many health issues associated with various types of birds, so it’s important to consult with us about your bird’s health. It’s also important for them to receive regular checkups so that we can establish a baseline in their body chemistry and detect any potentially harmful changes.
If you have any questions about how we can care for your poultry or pet bird, please contact us today.
It is important that your puppy or kitten is as healthy as possible from the beginning.
All kittens should be tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) as soon as they are adopted, sometimes they may require more than one test in the first year of their life.
Both puppies and Kittens should also be dewormed. This involves a simple injection or oral medication, sometimes multiple times, in order to break the parasite’s life cycle.
Because not all types of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites will be destroyed by deworming medication, it is also important to test your pet’s stool to ensure no other parasites exist. Some GI parasites (like Roundworms) are contagious to humans. A quick and easy fecal exam can protect your pets and your family.
Flea and tick medication is an important part of keeping your pet healthy. Fleas and ticks can carry parasites that can make your puppy or kitten very sick. It is easy to protect them with monthly flea and tick prevention.
Heartworm prevention comes in an easy to give chewable treat, or a quick squirt on the back. Protecting your pet from a life threatening disease has never been so simple!
Ask your pet’s veterinarian about how the right nutrition can help to keep your pet healthy!
